Weekend heat wave expected in Cheyenne, records may fall

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne is warning of a potentially significant heat wave arriving late this week. The region will see quiet weather and warming conditions through Tuesday night.

“Highs for most locations this afternoon will still be slightly below average in the mid-70s to mid-80s,” said NWS Meteorologist Shelby Fuller. Tuesday’s temperatures will rise to average levels as “the ridge over the West Coast strengthens and begins to gradually shift eastward.”

By midweek, temperatures will climb, reaching near 90 degrees in parts of Carbon County. Eastern areas will see highs in the mid-80s to low 90s. Light winds will prevail, but a quick shower or thunderstorm is possible in the mountains.

NWS Lead Forecaster Timothy Trudel stated, “Wednesday will likely be our last ‘average’ day for a while in terms of temperatures.” The heat wave, driven by a high-pressure system from the West Coast, will affect Wyoming and surrounding regions starting Thursday.

“Afternoon high temperatures [will be] solidly into the mid- to upper 90s across most of the forecast area,” Trudel added. Some areas, like Torrington and Scottsbluff, may see temperatures between 100 and 106 degrees.

The hottest day for southeast Wyoming is expected to be Saturday, with western Nebraska hitting peak temperatures on Sunday. Daily records a few degrees lower on July 13 and 14 are at risk of being broken this weekend, according to NWS in Cheyenne reports.

Late Sunday into early next week, there’s a slight chance of thunderstorms as some monsoon moisture moves north.
