Cheyenne sees dry month with active severe weather in July

(Stew Dyer / Cap City News)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July proved to be a dry month for Cheyenne and surrounding areas, with all climate sites reporting below-normal precipitation totals. Most locations received less than half of their average rainfall, contributing to a significant year-to-date rainfall deficit, according to the National Weather Service.

Despite the lack of rainfall, severe weather was active, particularly with high winds. The NWS in Cheyenne issued 67 severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings last month, surpassing the July average of 51. Every climate site, except Scottsbluff, experienced at least one storm with winds of 60 mph or greater.

Surprisingly, temperatures were close to average for July. Daytime highs were generally 1–3 degrees above average, while overnight lows were 1–3 degrees below average. These fluctuations largely balanced out, resulting in near-average temperatures overall.
