CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected in Cheyenne this afternoon and evening, with storms capable of producing torrential rainfall, gusty winds and isolated large hail.
The National Weather Service in Cheyenne reports that rain has already been observed this morning, with Cheyenne Automated Surface Observing Systems recording over an inch in the past six to seven hours. Rainfall rates are averaging about 0.3–0.4 inches per hour, with more storms expected to develop this afternoon.
A secondary shortwave will approach this afternoon, leading to further storm development. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated along the Interstate 80 corridor, where abundant rainfall has already occurred. These showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue overnight as the shortwave trough moves through the area.
On Wednesday, a similar pattern will repeat as a trough remains over the region. While the heavy rainfall potential will decrease, showers and thunderstorms will persist through the day and into Thursday.
The long-term forecast indicates that showers and thunderstorms will be most likely on Friday, Sunday and Monday, with drier conditions expected for Saturday. Temperatures will remain near normal, with highs in the 80s.
