CHEYENNE, Wyo. — As of 8 a.m., Cheyenne residents are facing an air quality alert with a current Air Quality Index of 160, classified as “unhealthy.” According to airnow.gov, this level of smoke is harmful to everyone, especially sensitive groups.
All residents are advised to keep outdoor activities brief and light. The alert suggests that anyone experiencing symptoms should immediately move indoors. Sensitive groups, including people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, pregnant individuals and those spending prolonged time outdoors, should consider moving all activities indoors.
This air quality level, which falls within the 151–200 AQI range, has been linked to potential health effects for the general public. The Environmental Protection Agency states that even short exposure to this level of smoke can lead to discomfort or worsened conditions for at-risk individuals.
Outdoor workers and physically active individuals are particularly encouraged to monitor their health. If symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation or shortness of breath develop, they should stop all outdoor activity and seek shelter indoors.
