Cheyenne faces weekend of thunderstorms; fire weather risks loom next week

(Stew Dyer / Cap City News)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Daily thunderstorms will impact Cheyenne through Sunday, bringing the potential for localized heavy rainfall. While the weekend will be stormy, conditions are expected to dry out early next week, raising the possibility of fire weather concerns as temperatures rise.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has forecast scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend. The storms are expected to bring significant rainfall, with some areas potentially receiving as much as 1.25 inches. However, the overall threat for severe weather remains low due to modest instability.

Convective Available Potential Energy, a measure of atmospheric instability that helps fuel thunderstorms, may reach moderate levels in some areas, particularly east of Interstate 25. This instability could lead to a few strong thunderstorms, though most storms will likely bring only heavy rain.

Daytime temperatures are expected to stay near normal for this time of year, with highs in the 70s and 80s across southeast Wyoming.

Starting on Monday, a drying trend will begin, reducing precipitation chances and creating conditions more conducive to fire weather. By midweek, temperatures are expected to rise slightly above normal, while the risk of thunderstorms diminishes.

Later in the week, a potential cold front could affect the region, bringing cooler temperatures. However, forecasts remain uncertain, with highs on Thursday ranging from 68 to 81 degrees.

Today’s air quality index was at 61 this morning, indicating moderate conditions. Residents with respiratory sensitivities should take some precautions outdoors. Yesterday, the AQI peaked at 201 due to smoke from wildland fires, which pushed air quality into the “very unhealthy” range. While conditions have improved today, residents are advised to stay informed as smoke from nearby fires could affect air quality again.
