CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne recorded one of its wettest Augusts in history, starkly contrasting its dry spring and early summer. The city received 3.24 inches of rain, making it the eighth wettest August since records began. This rainfall matched Cheyenne’s total rainfall from April through July combined.

The change in weather came as a relief for many after an extended dry spell. Cheyenne’s average temperature for the month was 69.3 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees above normal. The city saw a high of 94 on Aug. 1, 3 and 4, while the coldest temperature dipped to 45 on Aug. 30. The wettest day was Aug. 12, when 1.11 inches of rain fell.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne reported 52 severe thunderstorm warnings in August, the third-highest number of warnings for the month since 2019 and 1996. Severe storms were unusually frequent this late in the season, contributing to the rainfall totals. A 52 mph wind gust was also recorded on Aug. 14, adding to the active weather pattern.

The cooler and wetter weather arrived in mid-August, preventing the month’s early heat wave from setting any record temperatures. However, the consistent rain and moderate temperatures helped balance out the warm start to the month.

Overall, August brought much-needed rainfall to Cheyenne and neighboring areas, with above-normal precipitation recorded across most of the region. Laramie, which saw 2.99 inches of rain, recorded its second-wettest August. In contrast, Rawlins and Alliance were the only locations with below-normal rainfall.
