Cheyenne to stay warm; thunderstorms possible midweek

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne will see warmer-than-average temperatures today, with highs running 5–10 degrees above normal for early September. Skies will be mostly clear, though some mid- to high-level clouds may drift along the Colorado border, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

Dry air behind a weak shortwave trough near the Wyoming–Nebraska border will keep most areas dry. However, isolated showers or thunderstorms could develop in Carbon and Albany counties later this afternoon and evening, though Cheyenne is unlikely to see much precipitation.

By Wednesday, the weather pattern will start to shift. A more potent trough will move in from the northwest, bringing increasing moisture to the region. Winds will shift to the south-southwest, helping funnel this moisture into southeast Wyoming. Precipitable water levels in Cheyenne are expected to rise from 0.46 inches this afternoon to 0.72 inches by Wednesday evening, which is above normal for this time of year.

Morning showers are possible, with a better chance of thunderstorms developing by the afternoon. A mid-level frontal boundary, where different air masses meet in the middle levels of the atmosphere, will move through the region and could trigger more widespread storm activity. While severe storms aren’t expected, gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall could still occur.

On Thursday, attention turns to fire weather risks as stronger winds arrive. A large upper-level low will cross the northern Rockies, bringing gusty southwesterly winds, particularly along and west of Interstate 25. Wind gusts could exceed 45 mph, creating critical fire weather conditions.

While widespread precipitation is not expected Thursday, the combination of strong winds and dry air could heighten fire concerns, especially in western areas.

Looking ahead to the weekend, cooler temperatures are expected as the upper-level low moves through, bringing a brief respite from the heat. By early next week, another system may move into the region, potentially bringing more unsettled weather.
