CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne reported that Cheyenne saw a warmer and drier September than usual, with temperatures exceeding historical averages. The monthly climate summary for September 2024 from the Cheyenne Regional Airport revealed notable deviations from normal weather patterns, particularly in temperature and precipitation.
Cheyenne’s average high temperature for the month was 79.9 degrees, 6.6 degrees above the norm of 73.3. The warmest day of the month occurred on Sept. 3, when the temperature reached 89 degrees, which was still lower than last year’s high of 92 on the same day. The lowest temperature recorded was 40 degrees on Sept. 23, which was slightly below the normal low of 44.
In terms of precipitation, Cheyenne fell well below average. The city received only 0.37 inches of rain for the entire month, significantly less than the normal 1.47 inches. The heaviest rainfall was recorded on Sept. 4, when 0.37 inches fell, marking the only substantial rain event for the month. There was only one day with measurable rainfall, well below the usual 7.3 days of rain in September.
Snowfall, which sometimes makes an early appearance in Cheyenne, was absent this year. The city typically sees around 1 inch of snow in September, but none fell this time.
Wind speeds were notable as well. The highest gust recorded reached 52 mph on Sept. 17, with winds coming from the southwest. This gust exceeded normal wind activity for the month.
With warm, dry conditions dominating the month, Cheyenne also saw fewer days with cloud cover. Out of the 30 days in September, 28 were classified as fair, with only two days considered partly cloudy and none deemed cloudy.
