CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne area will see an elevated chance of wildfires as the weekend gets underway, with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne placing the area under a red flag warning until 7 p.m. Saturday.
Red flag warnings are declared when the NWS determines that there are or will be critical fire conditions. The NWS in Cheyenne reports that the combination of warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds increases the chance of wildfires in the region. Strong, gusty winds could cause erratic fire behavior should one start.
Today, Cheyenne is expected to see areas of smoke before noon. The day will likely remain sunny, with a high temperature near 78 degrees. Conditions should also be windy, with a west-northwest wind of 15–20 mph increasing to speeds of up to roughly 30 mph. Wind gusts could be as strong as 45 mph.
The patchy areas of smoke should continue past sundown, the NWS in Cheyenne reports. The night should otherwise be mostly clear, with a low around 38 degrees.
