CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne will see continued dry and warm conditions through early next week. The recent weak shortwave has moved east, and a new trough is pushing into a persistent ridge. Expect temperatures in the mid-70s west of the Laramie Range and reaching the 80s to the east. A few Nebraska Panhandle areas could approach 90.

Record highs may be matched or approached in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

The westerly breeze will keep fire weather risks elevated, especially in wind-prone areas. Though not meeting criteria for critical fire weather, any fires that start could spread rapidly. It’s been 35 days since the last measurable rainfall in Cheyenne, contributing to the ongoing dryness.

Tonight, a passing shortwave will bring increased cloud cover, which has been rare recently. A weak cold front will shift winds to the north-northeast, bringing a cooler air mass by Friday morning. Lows will remain above normal but cooler compared to previous nights. Friday’s highs will drop 10–15 degrees east of the Laramie Range, though temperatures will still be above average.

Smoke and haze will persist. Westerly and southerly winds today may provide temporary relief, but northerly flow tonight could bring more smoke.

The eight- to 14-day forecast for Cheyenne suggests a shift toward cooler conditions, while still keeping above-normal temperatures for the season. There is potential for the first widespread freeze of the season as a potent upper-level trough digs across the central United States. This system could bring freezing temperatures and possibly some snowfall by next weekend.

While precipitation chances remain minimal in the near term, the approaching trough could bring the area’s first significant moisture since the dry spell began. This potential system, though still over a week away, may include snow as it moves over the region, which could break the ongoing dry streak.

Forecasters are monitoring this development closely, as its progression will determine the timing and extent of any freeze or snowfall.
