CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A push of cold air today is expected to bring scattered rain showers to Cheyenne and surrounding areas, potentially ending a 41-day dry spell. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne forecasts gusty winds this morning, especially along the Interstate 80 corridor between Laramie and Rawlins. Winds may reach over 50 mph in some spots.
Rain chances will increase this afternoon as cooler air settles into the region. A strong cold front will move in Friday, bringing even colder temperatures and a chance of snow in higher elevations. The Muddy Gap area is under a winter weather advisory for possible snow accumulations of 1–4 inches in lower elevations and up to 6 inches in the mountains.
Cheyenne may see scattered rain showers today and Friday, with snow unlikely to accumulate in lower areas. However, higher terrain west of the Laramie Range might experience light snow by Friday afternoon. The cold front will drop temperatures further, with the weekend forecast showing highs struggling to reach the mid-50s.
The NWS in Cheyenne says the region could also face one of the first widespread freezes of the season by Saturday morning, with lows in the mid-30s expected across southeast Wyoming.
Looking ahead, there’s good news from the Climate Prediction Center’s eight- to 14-day outlook. From Oct. 24 to Oct. 30, southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle could transition into a wetter weather pattern. This shift may help ease critical fire weather conditions, as a high-pressure system over the Rockies is expected to move slightly east. This would allow more Pacific storm systems to enter the region, bringing much-needed moisture. Fortunately, while more storms are expected, temperatures should stay above to near normal for the season, avoiding any extreme cold.
