CHEYENNE, Wyo. — An unseasonably warm fall day awaits Cheyenne today under mostly cloudy skies ahead of a chance for rain and snow midweek.

Strong winds expected in southeast Wyoming today are a precursor to a pattern shift that will bring much-needed precipitation to the region, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

A broad upper-level trough will move onshore from the west, bringing cooler temperatures and increasing moisture. Precipitation is expected to begin as rain or a rain–snow mix before transitioning to all snow in the mountains. Winter weather advisories have been issued for mountain zones from midnight tonight through noon Wednesday, when the heaviest snowfall is expected.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the mountain ranges from midnight tonight through noon Wednesday. Accumulations between 6 and 12 inches are possible in the mountains, with locally higher amounts of up to 14 inches possible. (National Weather Service graphic)

Mountain areas could see accumulations of 6–12 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. The heaviest snow is expected Tuesday, with an additional 4–6 inches possible Wednesday morning.

The snow will be accompanied by breezy conditions, particularly on Wednesday morning, when surface winds could reach 10–15 mph. This may lead to blowing snow in the mountains, potentially reducing visibility and impacting travel, meteorologists wrote in the forecast discussion.

Northern portions of the region, including the North Laramie Range and Pine Ridge, could also see some snow accumulation, with 1–2 inches possible, and locally higher amounts. This is due to northerly surface winds enhancing precipitation in Converse and Niobrara counties.

Temperatures will be cooler than average with highs in the mid-30s to mid-40s. A brief warmup is expected Thursday and Friday before another system moves in Saturday, bringing more wind and a chance of precipitation. However, there is some uncertainty regarding the track and intensity of this second system, meteorologists said.
