CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne and surrounding areas in southeast Wyoming are set to experience snow and dense fog through Saturday morning, potentially affecting travel and creating hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a winter weather advisory from 11 a.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Saturday, covering Cheyenne, Kimball, the Interstate 80 Summit and adjacent areas.
Starting this morning, visibility is expected to remain low, with dense fog reducing visibility to a quarter-mile in some places, especially along the I-80 corridor. Drivers should plan for slick spots, wet roads and possible black ice between Cheyenne and the Colorado state line, according to recent WYDOT reports.
Conditions are expected to worsen into the afternoon as snow arrives, with lower elevations in Laramie County predicted to receive 2–3 inches of snow, while the higher terrain near the Summit could see accumulations of up to 6 inches.
The NWS reports that moisture streaming in from a system over New Mexico will interact with cold temperatures in the region, producing bursts of snow throughout Friday night.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute,” the advisory warns.
Travelers should expect reduced visibility, slippery road conditions and areas of freezing fog or drizzle in spots, particularly in higher elevations.
The storm is expected to taper off by Saturday afternoon as the low-pressure system shifts eastward toward central Nebraska. While the weekend will see this storm exit the area, a second system is anticipated to bring high winds late Sunday night and into Monday, with gusts possibly impacting areas prone to strong winds.
Forecasts show dry conditions and warmer-than-normal temperatures through the week, although a cold front midweek could temporarily drop temperatures back to seasonal norms.
By Sunday, highs should reach the mid-50s to low 60s in the eastern plains and mid-40s west of I-25. Forecasters are also monitoring another Pacific system, expected to bring increased winds midweek, with potential high wind advisories likely. Temperatures should then rebound, bringing a brief return to mild weather as high pressure builds over the region.
