CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne residents will experience much colder weather today, with blustery winds and scattered snow showers in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain chilly, though not near record lows, as an arctic air mass settles over southeast Wyoming.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a cold front swept through the region Monday evening, driven by a powerful storm system now centered over Minnesota. This front introduced much colder air, with daytime highs expected to stay below normal.
Winds, although breezy across the area, are not forecast to reach high wind criteria during the day. However, gusts could become stronger by tonight, particularly in the wind-prone areas along Interstate 80.
Afternoon snow showers may develop west of the Laramie Range, extending east toward the Interstate 25 corridor. The atmospheric setup includes steep lapse rates and moist air above a dry boundary layer, which will promote snow showers but limit significant accumulation. Measurable precipitation is less likely east of I-25, where dry surface conditions dominate. While snow squalls are not expected, motorists should remain cautious, especially along mountain passes.
Winds will become a more prominent concern overnight as a jet streak strengthens overhead, increasing pressure gradients across the region. A high wind watch is in effect for Arlington, Elk Mountain and the I-80 summit. Gusts could reach 50–60 mph in these areas late tonight into Wednesday.
While high winds are not currently forecast for the I-25 corridor or other parts of Laramie County, conditions could change as the system develops.
Despite the gusty conditions, a brief warmup is expected Wednesday as a ridge builds over the Rockies. Temperatures will rise to near average, with plentiful sunshine. However, winds will persist through the day, particularly in higher elevations and gap areas.
The rest of the week will bring fluctuating weather patterns. Highs on Thursday and Friday will climb 5–10 degrees above normal, with breezy winds continuing. Fire weather concerns could arise in the lee of the Laramie Range, where downslope winds will keep conditions dry.
Another cold front is expected to move into the region over the weekend, bringing temperatures back to seasonal averages and introducing additional chances for precipitation early next week.
