Gusty winds bring risks to southeast Wyoming; milder conditions expected this weekend

Travelers warned of hazardous crosswinds as winds gust up to 60 mph across the region.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A high wind warning will take effect at 3 p.m. Wednesday and remain in place until 5 a.m. Thursday. The warning includes lower elevations in Converse County, central Carbon County, central Laramie County, east Platte County and the Laramie Valley. Winds will range from 30 to 40 mph, with gusts of up to 65 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

These strong winds are expected to impact transportation, particularly for lightweight or high-profile vehicles like campers and tractor trailers. North–south roadways may experience hazardous crosswinds, with a high risk of vehicle blowovers. The winds will ease below warning levels by Thursday morning but are expected to remain gusty throughout the day.

Dry and mild weather will follow, with temperatures climbing into the 50s and 60s over the weekend. Friday and Sunday could also bring elevated winds, although not as intense as Wednesday night’s event. The NWS in Cheyenne forecasts temperatures 15–20 degrees above normal for this time of year, with potential strong winds returning Sunday.
