Weekend snow expected after windy midweek conditions

Colder temperatures and snow showers to follow gusty conditions in Cheyenne

Lions Park (Stew Dyer / Cap City News)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Gusty northwest winds and scattered snow showers are expected to create challenging conditions across Cheyenne today. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne reports that snow showers could develop after 2 p.m., with patchy blowing snow further reducing visibility during the afternoon. Localized areas might see up to an inch of accumulation, with higher amounts expected in the nearby mountains.

Temperatures will reach a high near 22 degrees, though windchill values will remain between zero and 5 degrees, creating a bitterly cold day. Winds will steadily increase throughout the morning, reaching sustained speeds of 25–30 mph with gusts of up to 45 mph. These conditions could make travel hazardous.

Overnight, patchy blowing snow will continue under partly cloudy skies as temperatures drop to around 8 degrees. Windchill values may dip as low as minus 10, with northwest winds holding steady at 20–25 mph and gusts nearing 35 mph. These conditions will persist through the evening and into early Thursday, marking a continuation of the region’s recent blustery weather pattern.

The NWS in Cheyenne attributes today’s weather to an upper-level trough slowly moving eastward, creating favorable conditions for snow showers and gusty winds across southeastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle. This pattern is expected to remain largely unchanged through Thursday, with a weak ridge developing later in the week.

Thursday will bring mostly dry conditions, but high winds could return late in the day, particularly in areas prone to elevated wind activity. Looking toward the weekend, widespread snow showers are anticipated as another Pacific system moves into the region. Colder-than-average temperatures may accompany the snow, with medium- to long-range forecasts suggesting the potential for significant winter weather impacts.
