CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Bitter cold and strong winds will continue to impact southeast Wyoming on Thursday, with more snow and high winds expected through the weekend.
High wind warnings are in effect for the Interstate 80 Summit until midday Thursday due to gusts exceeding 65 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne. Wind-prone areas, including Arlington and Bordeaux, have already recorded gusts over 65 mph. Blowing snow could create slick conditions and reduced visibility in these areas.
A Pacific storm system will bring heavy snowfall to the mountains late Thursday and into the weekend. The Sierra Madre and Snowy ranges are expected to see significant accumulation, with the heaviest snowfall rates Thursday night into Friday morning. Lower elevations, including portions of Carbon County, could see 1–3 inches of snow.
Winds will increase again across Carbon County on Thursday afternoon and last into Friday morning. Gusts may exceed 75 mph in areas near Elk Mountain and Walcott Junction. Forecasters say the strongest winds will likely occur in the afternoon and evening hours.
By Saturday, another cold front will bring additional snowfall to southeast Wyoming. Lower elevations could receive 1–2 inches, while mountain areas may see up to 8 inches. Sunday is expected to be drier before another storm system moves in early next week. More rounds of snow and high winds are possible through midweek.
