CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A man was fatally shot by law enforcement officers Saturday in Crook County after he fired on them while they tried to arrest him, the Wyoming Highway Patrol reported Sunday.
At around 10:10 p.m. Friday, a trooper stopped the man as he was walking along Interstate 90 near milepost 184. The trooper learned there was an active warrant for the man, and asked for assistance from the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, a press release states.
A struggle ensued during the arrest. The man pulled a handgun he had on him and fired several shots at law enforcement before running into the dark, the release states. A search was conducted through the night, but the man wasn’t found until the morning.
At around 11:12 a.m. Saturday, officers found the man around milepost 185 along I-90. The man fired at officers again as they attempted to arrest him, the release states. Law enforcement returned fire, striking him. The man was arrested and was immediately given medical attention, according to the release. He died a short time later.
“No law enforcement officers were injured during this event, and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation has taken the lead over the case,” the release states.
No further details, including the man’s identity, have been released.
