CASPER, Wyo. — Yellowstone National Park saw 567,587 recreation visits in September 2022, about 36% fewer than the record 882,078 visits the park saw in September 2021.

Yellowstone’s visitation numbers have been impacted this year by historic June flooding that damaged multiple roads. Yellowstone is 32% behind the record pace of visitations in 2021 so far this year.

The park was closed from June 12 through June 21, and while three entrances reopened on June 22, it wasn’t until Saturday, Oct. 22 that the Northeast Entrance reopened to all traffic. The North Entrance remains closed to visitor vehicles.

Visitations year-to-date in the wake of the historic flooding are behind even 2020, when Yellowstone saw closures due to COVID-19. Here are Yellowstone’s visitation numbers through the end of September for the past six years, according to a Monday news release from Yellowstone Public Affairs:

2022 – 3,014,569 (The park was closed June 13 through June 21. Three entrances opened June 22.)

2021 – 4,472,687

2020 – 3,393,642 (The park was closed March 24 through May 17. Two entrances opened May 18 and the remaining three opened on June 1.)

2019 – 3,807,815

2018 – 3,860,695

2017 – 3,872,775Yellowstone
