Yellowstone closes West, South, East Entrances to prepare for winter; North Entrance reopened

CASPER, Wyo. — On Tuesday, Yellowstone National Park closed its West, South and East Entrances to prepare for the park’s winter season.

While those entrances were closed, the North Entrance was reopened on Sunday after historic summer flooding.

“The road from the North Entrance in Gardiner, MT, through the park to the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, MT, is the only road that is open year-round to automobiles,” Yellowstone Public Affairs said in a press release Tuesday.

Most park roads are closed with no access to places like Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone Public Affairs said.

Snowmobile and snowcoach travel will begin in Yellowstone on Dec. 15.

If people do decide to drive through the northern entrances in fall or winter, Yellowstone Public Affairs said they should be prepared for changing weather and dangerous conditions and should expect limited services. Road closures could occur and people should have flexible travel plans.

Road condition information is available via go.nps.gov/yellroads.
