INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Six student athletes from the University of Wyoming track and field teams qualified for the West first rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held in Sacramento, California, starting on May 24.
The top 48 declared athletes from each region qualify for the event. Katelyn Mitchem was the lone Cowgirl to get her name in the field. Mitchem will be the only Wyoming athlete to compete in two events next week as she qualified in ninth for the steeplechase and in 37th for the 5K.
Seth Bruxvoort, Cameron Burkett, Ryker Holtzen, Kareem Mersal and Jacob White will all represent the Cowboys. Bruxvoort and Holtzen will compete in the steeplechase, as Bruxvoort placed 40th while Holtzen ranks 16th among the competition. Burkett, a Casper native, qualified in 32nd for the shot put, Mersal 16th in the long jump and White in 36th for the 5K.
Bruxvoort and Holtzen will start Wyoming off with the steeplechase semifinals on Wednesday in California, slated to be run at roughly 8 p.m. MDT. The top 24 in the event will move on to the finals on Friday. Mersal and Burkett will follow the distance runners with their events.
Mitchem will run the first of her two events on Thursday with the semis of the Steeplechase at 8:02, followed by the finals of the Steeplechase on Saturday and then one of the final events of the completion, the 5K, also on Saturday.
White will race on Friday evening.
