CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The potentially record-breaking heat that’s to come Monday across southeastern Wyoming has prompted meteorologists to declare a series of alerts ahead of time.

The National Weather Service station in Cheyenne has issued both a heat advisory and fire weather watch that’s to be in effect for portions of Monday in Wyoming’s capital city as a high of 98 degrees — which would break an all-time record for July 18 set in 1998is currently projected in the city’s forecast.

The heat advisory is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Monday as heat indexes will range around 100 or more across southeastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle. The fire weather watch will officially begin an hour earlier and end at the same time as the advisory, prompted by low humidity (9 to 15%) and up to 35 to 45 mph wind gusts by late afternoon to early evening Monday.

The station recommends that those in alert areas take precaution when dealing with the extreme temperatures.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the station said. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”
