CHEYENNE, Wyo. — It’s been sunny and hot this Labor Day holiday weekend, and that trend will continue as high pressure continues to dominate the Rocky Mountain region.
Sunday was a record-breaking day for Cheyenne as the high of 94 beat the previous record of 93 degrees set in 1960, the National Weather Service in Cheyenne said. Laramie tied its record high of 89 degrees, also set in 1960.
Another heat record is in jeopardy today. The Sept. 5 record of 94 degrees was set in 2020, but today’s forecast high is 96 degrees. Skies will be clear, save for some smoke from western wildfires, and winds will come from the northwest at 10–15 mph.
“Elevated fire weather conditions are also possible late this afternoon with wind gusts of 10–20 mph possible at times,” a Hazardous Weather Outlook states.
Mostly clear skies will prevail into the overnight period as the low falls to near 59 degrees.
The rest of the week is shaping up to offer more of the same. The sun will shine brightly Tuesday and Wednesday with forecast highs of 95 and 98 degrees, respectively. Overnight lows under clear to mostly clear skies are forecast at around 57 degrees.
Thursday will also be sunny and hot, with a high near 94, but a cool front should pass through Wyoming later in the day, bringing some breezes and an overnight low of 52 degrees. Due to the heat and expected wind, critical fire conditions may return Thursday.
That will set the area up for a much cooler Friday with a high of just 74 degrees. Precipitation chances also pick up Friday as high pressure moves east and moisture returns to the atmosphere, the National Weather Service said.
“A chilly start to the weekend is expected with Saturday morning lows in the 40s! A crisp fall morning! Daytime highs will struggle to get into the low 70s,” meteorologists wrote in the forecast discussion.
